The 85th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II, which falls in 2024, as well as the 35th anniversary of the Reconciliation Mass at Krzyżowa, provide an excellent opportunity to familiarise German audiences with the historical experiences of Poles and Poles and to sensitise them to the differences in Polish and German memories of these events. These are special events, as they focus on both the extremely negative experiences of Europe, especially of the Polish-German neighbourhood, which should not only be a warning but also a point of constant reflection. As well as the positive ones, which should still inspire us today to think about the strength of civil society and models for our mutual relations.

Therefore, the Krzyżowa Foundation, with funding from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland, is embarking on a project (public task) entitled. "From conflict to reconciliation. Poland in its relations with Germany 1939-1989. (On the 85th anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War and the 35th anniversary of the Reconciliation Mass at Krzyżowa)".

Its aim is to create a space for dialogue and reflection between Poles and Germans, and to promote knowledge of Poland's recent history, experience and contribution to European history in the 20th century - being a country that was not only the first to confront Nazi totalitarianism, but also the first to successfully oppose communist dictatorship, starting the process that led to the collapse of Soviet power in the countries of the so-called Eastern Bloc. A country whose society was mature and responsible enough to decide to enter into dialogue with German society, overcoming the post-war hostility, and which led to the landmark event of the Reconciliation Mass in Krzyżowa on 12 November 1989. This event symbolically started a process whose effects can still be seen today.

The project will run from April to December 2024. It will include two historical conferences, a training course for teachers and educators and the preparation of educational materials about the Reconciliation Mass at Krzyżowa.
