For the eighteenth time, the Krzyżowa Foundation invited to the Seminar of Memorials of Eastern and Western Europe. After the seminar in 2020, shortly before the scheduled date, had to be canceled due to a pandemic, the Krzyżowa Foundation together with other project partners decided to move the event to the virtual space in 2021.
Due to this change, it was decided to shorten the four-day event to two days. On 25 and 26 March employees of memorial sites, museums and research institutions from Eastern, South-Eastern and Western Europe were invited to discuss the topic “Virtual Memory. Memory Places and Digital Media ”.
The interest in the seminar was enormous and for the first time everyone could take part in it - there was no limit to the number of beds available in Krzyżowa. Over 150 people from 15 countries registered, and the meeting, which took place on the Zoom platform, was attended by over 100 participants in each thematic block.
The topics and projects on display ranged from "commemorating with games" to the format of interactive interviews using holograms, such as the one used by the Shoa Foundation for its "Dimensions in Testimony" project.
Moreover, over 20 institutions participating in the project presented themselves in the form of one-minute films.
All participants were very pleased with the event. Also from the organizers' point of view, the first online Seminar of Memorial Sites was a complete success. We are considering making part of the online seminar available to a wider audience in the future.
The Seminar of Memorials for Eastern and Western Europe was organized and financed by:
The Krzyżowa Foundation for Mutual Understanding in Europe, the Federal Foundation for the Study of the SED Dictatorship, the "Remembrance and Future" Center in Wrocław, the "Remembrance, Responsibility, Future" Foundation and the Protestant Academy in Berlin.
