On December 6, at the Faculty of Law of the University of Wrocław, a discussion "1989-2019. 30 years after the fall of the Iron Curtain" took place with the participation of witnesses of history: Elżbieta Sienkiewicz-Romańska, Władysław Frasyniuk, Rafał Bubnicki. The debate was moderated by Katarzyna Kaczorowska. The event was addressed to high school students.
- If we find a moment and look at the profiles of our family and friends in social media, we will see that we live well. Probably the best in our history. But that's why we started to forget - or to put it simply: we don't know our recent past. Thus, we should recognize that we have probably stopped drawing conclusions from painful experiences - not preparing ourselves for what may come. - Dr. Tomasz Skonieczny, Deputy Head of the European Academy of the Krzyżowa Foundation, explains the necessity of organizing such meetings.
- Therefore, it is extremely important to constantly look critically at our past and learn from it. This year's 30th anniversary of the fall of the Iron Curtain - the symbolic collapse of the communist system and the beginning of democracy, freedom and respect for human rights in the countries of the so-called Eastern bloc - is an excellent opportunity for this. - adds the organiser of the meeting.
The discussion about 1989 is one of numerous initiatives from the borderland of historical and civic education undertaken by the Krzyżowa Foundation for Mutual Understanding in Europe. It is to bring not only history closer to the younger generation, but above all to show what it can teach us, as well as to make us aware - thanks to the meeting with witnesses of history - that what for some is only knowledge learned from the pages of textbooks, for many contemporary people was a personal experience.
The meeting was organized by the Krzyżowa Foundation for Mutual Understanding in Europe in cooperation with the 13th High School in Wrocław.
