He studied history and Catholic theology at the Freie Universität in Berlin, obtained his doctorate in history at the Martin-Luther-Universität in Halle and his habilitation in humanities at the Pedagogical University of Cracow. His research interests focused particularly on German-Polish relations in the 20th century and especially on the reconciliation process after World War II.
He was a university lecturer and participated in several international research projects. He is the author of numerous scientific publications including two monographs. In addition, he has created or co-created several exhibitions, a documentary film and a radio play. He has published two volumes of interviews with witnesses of the time, including T. Mazowiecki, W. Bartoszewski, S. Stomma and R. von Wiezsäcker. He has published numerous popular science and journalistic texts, e.g. in Rzeczpospolita, Tygodnik Powszechny or Frankfurter Rundschau. As an expert, he has appeared, among others, on TVP, Polish Radio, Deutschlandfunk, Deutschlandradio Kultur, Info Radio Berlin and Westdeutscher Rundfunk.
In the past he was a member of, among others, the Scientific Council of the Western Institute in Poznań and the Council of the Krzyżowa Foundation for Mutual Understanding in Europe, currently a member of the Council of the College of Eastern Europe and of the Scientific Council of Haus Schlesien in Königswinter.
He was deputy director of the Historical Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Berlin and director of the IPN branch office in Wrocław. He has extensive experience in managing human resources and large educational projects in an international environment.
