The medal was given to Krzyzowa Foundation for Mutual Understanding in Europe and Kreisau-Initiative Berlin to award the reconciliation between Poland and Germany and to prize the involvement of those who after 1989 united people from different countries in Krzyzowa.
The Prize and the Medal were establish in 1965 to award people and institutions being an example for democratic attitude, social responsibility and engagement for initiatives of public importance. Prize and Medal are equivalent, but with prizes are awarded political activities and with medals the social engagement.
