Bishop Waldemar Pytel
Head of the Wrocław Diocese of the Evangelical-Augsburg Church in Poland. He was born in 1958 in the Cieszyn Silesia region. After graduating from the Christian Theological Academy in Warsaw, he was ordained a priest on 30 November 1986. Since 1992 - pastor of the Evangelical parish of the Church of Peace in Świdnica. Since 1997 - a member of the Synod of the Evangelical-Augsburg Church, in 2010-2012 he acted as the President of the Church Synod - the highest legislative authority of the Evangelical-Augsburg Church. He has been a member and founder of numerous institutions, including the Świdnica Society of Friends of the Sick “Hospicjum”.
On 7 March 2015, he was consecrated to the office of the Bishop of the Wrocław Diocese. He is the winner of many awards and distinctions, including: The Award of the City of Świdnica for his lifetime achievements in the field of the popularisation and protection of culture; St. Brother Albert Award for ecumenical activity and outstanding achievements in the protection of cultural assets; Rev. Prof. Janusz Pasierb ”CONSERVATOR ECCLESIAE” Award of the Association of Polish Monument Conservators for achievements in the field of protection of monuments; A. Gieysztor Award for over thirty years of efforts aimed at saving, revitalising and restoring the splendour of the Lutheran Quarter together with the Church of Peace in Świdnica.
For 20 years, Bishop Waldemar Pytel has been involved in the activities of the Council of the Krzyżowa Foundation for Mutual Understanding in Europe. In his work, he puts particular emphasis on issues related to reconciliation and peace between people and nations, hence his active involvement in the work of the Foundation. He is married and has two sons and a granddaughter.
