Newsletter Krzyżowa

Newsletter Krzyżowa

Dear Sir or Madam,

Welcome to the September edition of our Newsletter. We hope that you find the topics in this issue as interesting as those of the spring edition, because summer in Krzyżowa is the "hottest season" not only in terms of weather, but also in terms of the number of events taking place here!

The summer months in Krzyżowa this year were marked by a musical atmosphere. The musical summer opened with the first Polish-Ukrainian project MUSIC FOR FUTURE! There was a lot of excitement and emotion as the whole orchestra was created from the very beginning in Krzyżowa and referred to current happenings in Ukraine. However, there were many more musical impressions in Krzyżowa. This year, the eighth edition of the Krzyżowa-Music Festival took place, with as many as 11 concerts featuring world-renowned musicians. In our FORUM you can read Matthias von Hülsen's reflections on this year's edition of the Krzyżowa-Music Festival. Classical music from professionals is not all, during the summer we hosted participants of the SUZUKI workshop, The Masters' Students, as well as the 30th edition of the International Music Friendship project "Through music to friendship... through friendship to music". Of course, during the summer, we also had the opportunity to learn how to dance at the Flamenco Festival, which, like every year, accompanied the guitarists at the Summer Guitar Festival, or to follow the participants of the international inclusive exchange "Dance Festival".

The summer brought beautiful weather and many youth exchanges to Krzyżowa, which we missed a lot - after a long break due to a pandemic, numerous exchanges and youth activities returned to everyday life in Krzyżowa. We already have more than a dozen school exchanges behind us and we write about some of them later in the Newsletter. Liubov Shynder, IYMC Krzyżowa's educational project manager, shared her thoughts on 'what makes a successful youth project' in our FORUM.

At the same time, during the summer, there are still about 50 people at our facility, for whom we provide shelter, food and the most necessary things. You can read about all our initiatives related to the presence of guests from Ukraine on our website under KRZYŻOWA FOR UKRAINE. There you will also find information on how you can help us with these activities by making donations to the refugees staying at our centre. We want to help those refugees escaping from war for as long as it takes, and this will only be possible with your support.

Matthias von Hülsen: Report on the eighth edition of the Krzyżowa-Music Festival

With Schubert's 5th Symphony, the eighth edition of Krzyżowa-Music faded away on 4 September in Kreisau, conducted from the first desk by Viviane Hagner. This year, 50 selected musicians from all over the world gathered around our artistic director to intensively study 45 masterpieces of chamber music and then perform them in 11 acclaimed concerts. The great classics were performed as well as many rediscoveries of rarely or almost never heard works. And contemporary music was also given a particularly large amount of space in actually every concert this year with a piece by our great Greek composer in residence, Konstantia Gourzi.

The power of music to unite across all linguistic and cultural boundaries was particularly sought after in this crisis- and war-torn year and was also found at Krzyżowa-Music, as we shared Kreisau with the guests from Ukraine who had found refuge there.

Challenges and successes and challenges that I count as successes - Liubov Shynder

Liubov Shynder , IYMC Krzyżowa

I am writing this post a few days after the departure of the Polish-German-French youth group from Krzyzowa, which, inspired by the participants of this project, we called the project "Jazda!".

This slogan is a rarity among our projects lately. The names we use most often describe the content or form of the project in a direct way. That's why "Jazda!" was met with slight bewilderment on the part of my colleagues, but also with joy, after they got to know where the name came from, why exactly "Jazda".

That is why I also want to share this joy on the educator's blog.

The group of this project met in Krzyżowa for the second time this year. The previous online meeting took place in January, then there were several shorter meetings also online, and in May this year, the group met for a week-long programme in Marseille at the Camp des Milles, run by a partner organisation from France. It was then, at the first live meeting, that the need arose to choose a word in one of the participants' languages with which to easily evoke the attention of the whole group. At the same time, my fellow coordinating team members and I were thinking of a cleverer-sounding name than the previous one "We remember together to shape the future".

1990 in the former Eastern Bloc countries. Launch of a new website!

We invite you to visit www.year1990.eu, which presents the events of the breakthrough year 1990 in the Central and Eastern European countries.

The year 1990 was a turning point in overcoming the communist legacy and shaping democracy in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. In most of them, it brought the first completely free parliamentary, presidential and local government elections.

The year 1990 also marked the reunification of both German states. For the Baltic states, such as Lithuania - the first country in the region to declare its independence after 50 years of dependence on Soviet power - it was the beginning of a new era.

Responsibility, Community, Europe. The legacy of the Kreisau Circle today

On a conversation with history witness Helmuth Caspar von Moltke in Frankfurt am Main on 02.09.2022

While the bells of Frankfurt Cathedral were ringing outside, one could feel the end of an era in the lecture theatre of Haus am Dom. The peace order that had been worked on in Europe for so long seemed to have come to an end because of Russia's war with Ukraine, even if it still takes time for us to realise this. This was the gloomy analysis of Dr Robert Zurek who opened his talk with an eyewitness, Helmuth Caspar von Moltke - son of Freya and Helmuth James von Moltke, co-founders of the Kreisau Circle. Helmuth Caspar's father, was murdered by the Nazis in 1945 along with 7 other members for civil resistance.

80 years after the first two major meetings of the Krzyzowa Circle, questions were asked in Frankfurt am Main about the validity of the legacy. PhD Anna Quirin, director of the Freya von Moltke Foundation, spoke to Helmuth Caspar von Moltke about his childhood and his memories of life in Krzyżowa and the meetings of the Krzyżowa Circle in the House on the Hill.

Online Publication || Historical essays on 'uprooted' children available in four languages

At the beginning of the year, we posted an English-language publication containing historical essays designed to tell the story of 'stolen children' from Central and Eastern Europe. It depicted the policies of the Nazi authorities, the process of obtaining and germanising children and, by showing the fates of individuals, how strongly these events left their mark on them.

The publication included texts by authors from Poland, Germany, the Czech Republic and Ukraine [link]

Today we are posting all the texts from this publication in the national languages of their authors:

||MEDIA|| About the project "Uprooted - Stolen/ uprooted(...)" in the Wałbrzych edition of the wyborcza.pl newspaper

We would like to recommend to you an article by Agnieszka Dobkiewicz, which appeared on 5 July 2022 in the online edition of the newspaper https://walbrzych.wyborcza.pl/, devoted to the fate of children taken from their families by the German occupation authorities during World War II.

Excerpt from the text:

(...) Henrich Himmler, a very important person in the apparatus of the Third Reich, was a man completely obsessed with the purity of the race, with a certain Germanic individual who would embody all that was best in himself," says journalist Anna Malinowska in a programme on this criminal activity prepared by the Krzyzowa Foundation. - This was the main driving force behind the abduction of children from other countries and their subsequent Germanisation within the Third Reich. Even among members of the Slavic peoples, even among the Poles, he saw opportunities for the recovery of so-called good blood.
